Frequently asked questions

Málaga is one of Spain's cities with the greatest economic dynamism and demographic growth. Its used car market reflects that activity: high turnover, sustained demand driven by tourism and a growing population, and a volume of sales that keeps on rising.
But selling a car in Málaga in 2026 has particularities worth knowing about. The city's ZBE covers 473 hectares of the centre (including the historic centre and Soho) with a progressive timetable of restrictions that affects more and more vehicles each year. Andalusia's Transfer Tax works in bands according to fiscal power. And your selling options are not limited to the local market: from Málaga you can access dealers across Spain without leaving home.
The used car market in Málaga
Málaga has a particular market profile within Andalusia. The city combines a resident population of around one million inhabitants in its metropolitan area (Torremolinos, Benalmádena, Fuengirola, Rincón de la Victoria, Alhaurín) with a constant flow of tourists and foreign residents, many of whom buy and sell used cars in the area.
The dry, sunny climate helps preserve bodywork, which keeps the value of cars in good condition. The most in-demand models follow the national trend (compact SUVs, small cars, hybrids), but with some local nuances: convertibles and small city cars are in good demand all year round (not just in spring, as in other cities), and cars with ECO or ZERO labels are quickly gaining ground because of the ZBE.
To find out the true value of your car in the current market, see how to find out how much your car is worth.
The Costa del Sol also generates specific demand for mid-range and premium cars among the resident foreign community. If you have a car of this type, the local market may be especially favourable.
Málaga's ZBE: restriction timetable and how it affects your sale
Málaga's ZBE came into force on 30 November 2024 and covers 473 hectares of the city centre, including the historic centre, the area around the Alcazaba and the Soho district. It has 97 control cameras distributed across 53 access points.
The restriction timetable is progressive and gets stricter each year.
Year 1 (November 2024 - November 2025). All vehicles can circulate regardless of their label. Adjustment period with no real restrictions for passenger cars.
Year 2 (November 2025 - November 2026, current situation). Access is restricted to vehicles without an environmental label that were not registered in Málaga before 30 November 2024. Cars with B, C, ECO and ZERO labels may circulate without restriction. Cars without a label registered in Málaga before that date may still circulate.
Year 3 (from November 2026). Vehicles with a B label that are not registered in Málaga before 30 November 2026 will also be restricted. Only vehicles with C, ECO and ZERO labels will have free access, plus Málaga residents with a B label or with no label.
The fine for entering the ZBE without authorisation is 200 euros (€100 with early payment).
If you want to maximise the price before the restrictions tighten further, see our strategies for getting the best price for your car.
What it means for you as a seller
If your car has a C, ECO or ZERO label. No restrictions. Your car can circulate in Málaga's ZBE and in any other city with a ZBE in Spain. Its market value remains intact.
If your car has a B label. It can circulate normally today, but from November 2026 only B-labelled cars registered in Málaga will be allowed into the ZBE. This reduces the pool of potential buyers: an out-of-Málaga buyer knows they won't be able to drive it through the centre. If you have a B-labelled car, selling before November 2026 may get you a better price than waiting.
If your car has no label. Demand is the most affected. Buyers from outside Málaga can no longer drive through the ZBE in your car. Residents still can, but the trend is clear: restrictions will only increase. Professional dealers still buy these cars (they have resale channels outside ZBE areas), but the price will keep falling as restrictions progress.
Transfer Tax in Andalusia: how much the buyer pays
In Andalusia, the Transfer Tax for used vehicles works in bands based on the car's fiscal power.
Up to 15 fiscal HP: 4% of the vehicle's fiscal value. More than 15 fiscal HP: 8% of the vehicle's fiscal value.
The fiscal value is calculated from the annual tables published by the Ministry of Finance, applying depreciation coefficients based on age. If the price declared in the contract is lower than the fiscal value, the tax office applies the fiscal value as the tax base.
For standard cars (10-12 fiscal HP) with a fiscal value of €10,000, the Transfer Tax is €400 (4%). For high-power cars (18+ fiscal HP) with a fiscal value of €20,000, the Transfer Tax rises to €1,600 (8%). If you want to understand all the taxes that affect a sale, see our guide to taxes when selling your car.
Options for selling your car in Málaga
Classified ad portals
Wallapop, Coches.net, Milanuncios and AutoScout24 work in Málaga just as they do in any other city. Wallapop has a very high user volume on the Costa del Sol, with a mixed buyer profile (local residents + foreigners). AutoScout24 can be especially useful if your car is in demand among European buyers.
Instant-buy companies
Compramostucoche, Flexicar and OcasionPlus operate in Málaga or its metropolitan area. Usual process: online valuation, in-person inspection, fixed offer between 10% and 20% below market value.
If you're considering this route, see what you should know before accepting a direct purchase offer.
Local dealers
Málaga has an extensive network of professional car buyers and dealers, concentrated in areas such as the Guadalhorce Industrial Estate, the Cádiz road and the Campanillas area. The Costa del Sol generally has a high density of specialist dealers, some focused on the foreign market.
Platforms with dealer bidding
With Dealcar, your car isn't limited to dealers in Málaga. More than 1,000 car buyers across Spain compete for it. The winning dealer collects the car from your home. This is especially relevant if your car has stronger demand outside the Costa del Sol (for example, a diesel with a C label that sells better in areas without a ZBE, or a premium car that appeals to dealers in Madrid or Barcelona).
Selling on marketplaces from Málaga: what to expect
Tourist market. The Costa del Sol attracts international buyers, which can be an advantage if your car is mid-range or premium. AutoScout24 and Coches.net can connect you with this profile. Publish the description in Spanish and English if you want to maximise reach.
Marked seasonality. Spring and the start of summer are the best times to sell in Málaga. The tourist season boosts demand (tourists who need a car, residents changing theirs). August is slower for private transactions, although dealers remain active. Winter is the quietest period.
High competition in the lower end of the market. For cars under €8,000, competition on portals is intense. There is lots of supply and the buyer has plenty of choice. To stand out, you need good photos, a sharp price and a complete description.
Label as a filter. Buyers in Málaga are increasingly sensitive to the environmental label. Make sure it is visible in the listing if your car has a C label or higher.

Dealers and car buyers in Málaga
Málaga and the Costa del Sol have a higher-than-average density of dealers, driven by tourism and the resident foreign population. This can be an advantage if your car matches local demand, but it also means dealers have plenty of stock to choose from.
The alternative to visiting dealers is to have them come to you. With Dealcar, dealers from all over Spain see your car and bid if they're interested. You don't need to travel: offers arrive on your phone and the winning dealer collects the car from your address in Málaga.

Frequently asked questions
Should I sell my B-labelled car before November 2026?
It is advisable if you want to maximise the price. From November 2026, B-labelled vehicles not registered in Málaga will not be able to access the ZBE, which reduces the number of potential buyers and puts downward pressure on the price. Selling before that date gives you access to a wider market of buyers.
How much Transfer Tax does the buyer pay in Málaga for a used car?
It depends on the fiscal power. Up to 15 fiscal HP, the rate is 4%. Above 15 fiscal HP, it rises to 8%. It is calculated on the vehicle's fiscal value according to the BOE tables.
Is it a good time to sell in Málaga?
Spring and the start of summer are the best periods because of strong tourist demand. But regardless of seasonality, if you have a B-labelled car or no label, the sooner you sell the better price you'll get, because ZBE restrictions will only get stricter.
Can I sell my car from Málaga to a dealer in another city?
Yes. With platforms such as Dealcar, your car reaches dealers across Spain. The buying dealer handles home collection and all the paperwork, regardless of their location.
Do foreign buyers on the Costa del Sol buy used cars?
Yes. There is a significant community of European residents (British, German, Scandinavian) who buy second-hand cars in the area. If your car is mid-range or premium, advertising on AutoScout24 and local portals can connect you with this profile. A bilingual description (Spanish-English) expands your reach.
