If you have an SUV and want to sell it, you have an advantage that sellers of saloons, MPVs, and city cars do not have: you are selling the type of car that most people in Spain are looking for. SUVs account for more than 60% of new car sales, and their dominance is increasingly shifting to the second-hand market.

This does not mean that your SUV will sell itself. Price, condition, engine, and brand still matter. But it does mean that you are starting from a wider demand base than any other segment, which translates into more potential buyers, faster sales, and more stable prices.

In this guide, we explain how to make the most of that advantage.

SUVs dominate the second-hand market

The 2026 data confirms the trend that has been consolidating for years. In the first four months of the year, SUVs represented more than 255,000 units of new car sales in Spain, 11.5% more than the previous year. It is, by far, the best-selling body style.

In the second-hand market, the share of SUVs has grown steadily over the last five years. There are increasingly more SUVs available (because many new ones were sold between 2018 and 2023) and more buyers specifically looking for them.

The reasons for this preference are well known: high driving position, sense of security, versatility (city + highway + countryside), spacious boot, and aesthetics that Spanish buyers associate with modernity. For families, the SUV has replaced the MPV as the default option.

What is relevant for you as a seller is that the demand for used SUVs is high and sustained. It does not depend on a passing fad or a temporary tax incentive. SUVs are sought after because the market wants them, and that gives you negotiating power.

How much a used SUV is worth in Spain

SUVs retain value better than saloons and hatchbacks in the same segment, because demand is higher than supply for many models. These are rough guidelines by segment.

For a full reference, see how to find out what your car is worth.

Compact SUVs (B-SUV segment)

They are the most popular: manageable size for the city but with the versatility of an SUV.

Peugeot 2008 (2020-2022, 40,000-70,000 km). Between 15,000 and 20,000 euros. Seat Arona (2019-2022, 30,000-60,000 km). Between 14,000 and 19,000 euros. Renault Captur (2020-2022, 30,000-60,000 km). Between 14,000 and 19,000 euros. Volkswagen T-Cross (2019-2022, 30,000-60,000 km). Between 16,000 and 21,000 euros.

Medium SUVs (C-SUV segment)

The most competitive segment with the highest volume of sales.

Hyundai Tucson (2021-2023, 20,000-50,000 km). Between 22,000 and 30,000 euros. Peugeot 3008 (2020-2022, 30,000-60,000 km). Between 18,000 and 25,000 euros. Seat Ateca (2019-2022, 30,000-60,000 km). Between 17,000 and 24,000 euros. Kia Sportage (2022-2024, 15,000-40,000 km). Between 24,000 and 32,000 euros. Toyota RAV4 (2019-2022, 30,000-60,000 km). Between 24,000 and 33,000 euros (hybrid) / 20,000-27,000 euros (petrol).

Large SUVs (D-SUV segment and premium)

Less volume but higher price margins.

BMW X3 (2019-2022, 40,000-80,000 km). Between 28,000 and 40,000 euros. Audi Q5 (2019-2022, 40,000-80,000 km). Between 30,000 and 42,000 euros. Volvo XC60 (2019-2022, 40,000-70,000 km). Between 28,000 and 38,000 euros. Mercedes GLC (2019-2022, 40,000-70,000 km). Between 32,000 and 45,000 euros.

Which SUVs sell the fastest

Selling speed depends on the combination of model, engine, and price. These are the ones that spend the least time on the market.

Sold in days:

  • Toyota RAV4 Hybrid (massive demand, limited supply)

  • Hyundai Tucson Hybrid (alternative to the RAV4 with very good demand)

  • Seat Ateca 1.5 TSI (segment benchmark in petrol)

  • Peugeot 3008 Hybrid (most sought-after plug-in SUV)

Sold in 1-2 weeks:

  • Kia Sportage (all engines)

  • Volkswagen T-Roc / Tiguan

  • Peugeot 2008 / Seat Arona / Renault Captur (popular B-SUVs)

  • BMW X1 / X3 (accessible premium)

Sold in 2-4 weeks:

  • Diesel SUVs over 5 years old

  • SUVs from brands with lower demand (Citroën C5 Aircross, Opel Grandland)

  • SUVs with high mileage (over 150,000 km)

Factors that raise or lower the price of your SUV

In addition to the factors common to any car (brand, year, km, condition), there are specific variables that affect the price of SUVs.

What raises the price:

4x4 or AWD drivetrain. SUVs with all-wheel drive are worth between 5% and 10% more than the front-wheel-drive version of the same model. The demand for 4x4s is especially high in mountainous areas, Galicia, the Basque Country, and Castile and León.

Hybrid engine. A hybrid SUV is worth between 8% and 15% more than the same model in petrol. The combination of SUV + hybrid + ECO label is the most demanded in the market.

The combination of SUV + hybrid is the most in-demand. Check our guide on how to sell a hybrid car.

Panoramic roof. It is the most valued extra on an SUV. It can add between 500 and 1,500 euros to the price depending on the model.

Automatic gearbox. In SUVs, automatic transmission is almost standard. An SUV with a manual gearbox can be worth 3-5% less than the automatic version.

What lowers the price:

Diesel engine without a C label. A diesel SUV with a B label (prior to 2015) loses value faster than an equivalent petrol due to LEZ (ZBE) restrictions. A diesel SUV with a C label retains value reasonably well.

Above-average mileage. SUVs are used a lot on roads and accumulate mileage quickly. An SUV with 120,000 km after 4 years is common, but the buyer compares it with others of the same model with 60,000 km. The price difference can be significant.

Bodywork with dents or scratches. SUVs are more prone to car park scrapes (due to their size) and scratches on the wheel arches (due to their use on tracks). These details deduct more from a premium SUV than from a mainstream one.

Unpopular colour. The most sought-after colours in SUVs are white, grey, and black. Flashy colours (orange, green, electric blue) can subtract 2-3% if they limit the number of interested buyers.

How to prepare your SUV for sale

General rules apply (cleaning, documentation, photos), but there are specific details for SUVs.

Clean the wheel arches and underbody. SUVs accumulate mud and dirt in areas that are not visible in a passenger car. An SUV with a clean underbody and mud-free wheel arches conveys care.

Check the tyres. SUV tyres are more expensive than passenger car tyres (between 100 and 200 euros per unit). If they are worn, the buyer will use them as an argument to lower the price. If they are in good condition, highlight it.

Show the third row or the boot empty and clean. Many SUV buyers are looking for space. A clean and organised boot (without last week's shopping bags) demonstrates the useful volume of the car.

Service history. Premium SUVs (BMW, Audi, Mercedes, Volvo) are especially sensitive to history. A premium SUV without a service history at an official dealership raises more suspicion than a non-premium one without a history.

For the full list of documentation, see the documents needed to sell a car.

Where to sell a second-hand SUV

Classified portals. SUVs generate many clicks on portals. Good photos showing the size, the boot, and the interior are key. Portal search filters favour SUVs (SUV body style is the most used filter). Haggling is less aggressive than in other segments because the buyer knows there is demand.

Direct purchase companies. Buying sites like Flexicar and similar purchase SUVs with interest, as they are the easiest cars to resell. Even so, the offer will be 10-20% below market. Since your SUV sells easily through other channels, accepting a direct purchase offer means losing money unnecessarily.

The offer will be 10-20% below market. See what you should know before accepting.

Platforms with dealer bidding. This is where SUVs yield the best results. Dealerships need SUVs for their stock more than any other type of car, and competition for them is intense. With Dealcar, your SUV reaches more than 1,000 dealerships competing against each other. Popular SUVs (Tucson, 3008, Ateca, RAV4) generate many bids and competitive prices.

Dealcar: value your car for free and receive offers from dealers

Your SUV has demand in its favour. With Dealcar, you can value your car for free in less than 30 seconds and receive offers from more than 1,000 dealerships competing for it. SUVs generate special interest among professionals, who need them to cover the highest demand on the market.

Frequently asked questions

Do SUVs retain value better than hatchbacks?

Yes. Sustained high demand causes SUVs to depreciate between 3% and 8% less than an equivalent compact hatchback of the same model and year. Hybrid SUVs retain their value best of all in the market.

How long does it take to sell a second-hand SUV?

It depends on the model, but generally, SUVs sell faster than other segments. The most popular models (Tucson, 3008, RAV4) can sell in days with Dealcar. On portals, it takes between 2 and 6 weeks on average.

Is it better to sell my diesel SUV now or wait?

If your SUV has a B label, sell it now. LEZ (ZBE) restrictions are tightening and the demand for diesel is dropping. If it has a C label, you can wait a bit, but the long-term trend is the same. Hybrid SUVs are the only ones in the segment where waiting does not significantly penalise you.

Does 4x4 add value when selling?

Yes, between 5% and 10% compared to front-wheel drive. The advantage is greater in areas with demand for all-wheel drive (mountains, Galicia, northern Spain) and lower in flat urban areas.

What SUV colour sells best?

White, grey, and black attract the most demand. Model-specific colours that were popular at launch (such as the blue of the Peugeot 3008 or the grey of the Tucson) also sell well. Very flashy colours can limit demand.
