Can I cancel my car finance early?

Yes. Spanish legislation recognises the consumer's right to make an early repayment, in part or in full, of the outstanding capital of a loan at any time. It is a right that you cannot lose even if the contract does not explicitly mention it.

What can vary is the cost of that cancellation: the entity can apply an early cancellation fee, which the law limits but does not eliminate. There is also a special period: if you cancel within 14 calendar days from signing the contract, you can do so without any penalty. This is the so-called right of withdrawal from consumer credit.

How much it costs to cancel: the maximum legal fee

The early cancellation fee is regulated by law. According to current consumer credit regulations in Spain, the limits are:

If there are more than 12 months left until the loan matures: the maximum fee is 1% of the capital you are going to repay early.

If there are 12 months or less left until maturity: the maximum fee is 0.5% of the capital you are going to repay.

To understand how much you have left to pay in interest and if it is worth cancelling, the article on how much it costs to finance a car includes tables of real interest rates by amount and term.

In practice, not all entities apply the legal maximum. Many online banks and financial companies charge 0.5% regardless of the remaining term, and some charge nothing for early cancellation. Before cancelling, check the contract or call the entity to know exactly what fee applies.

A specific example: if you have 8,000 euros of outstanding capital left and you cancel the loan with more than 12 months ahead, the maximum fee is 80 euros (1% of 8,000). If there are less than 12 months left, the maximum is 40 euros. These are amounts that rarely change the decision to cancel if the interest savings are significant.

Important: if the interest rate on your finance is fixed and the entity can prove that the early cancellation causes it a financial loss higher than the maximum 1% fee, it can claim additional compensation from you. This is an exceptional case but contemplated by law. In practice, it only applies to fixed-rate mortgages with large amounts, not to standard car finance.

When it is worth cancelling early and when it is not

Cancelling before the term always saves future interest, but it is not always the smartest decision with that money. Here are the criteria to decide:

It is worth cancelling if: The APR of your finance is high (above 7-8%) and you have the money available in an account without generating a return. You are going to sell the car and need to release the retention of title so that the transfer is not blocked. You want to reduce your level of debt before asking for other finance or a mortgage. The savings in remaining interest clearly exceed the cancellation fee.

It is not worth cancelling if: That money could be invested at a return higher than the APR of your finance. For example, if you have a 5% APR but can invest in a fund with an expected return of 7%, cancelling the loan is not the best mathematical option. The APR is very low (below 4-5%) and you have other more profitable uses for that money. The cancellation fee plus the remaining interest exceed the cost of keeping the loan until the end.

How to calculate it: Add the interest you have left to pay according to the amortisation schedule plus the cancellation fee. Compare that figure with what that money would generate elsewhere. If the interest savings exceed the opportunity cost, cancel.

To compare the cost of your finance with alternatives, you must first understand what is NIR and APR and what differentiates each one.

What happens to the retention of title when cancelling

This is the point that most people are unaware of and that generates the most problems. When you finance a car, the banking entity usually registers a retention of title in the Register of Movable Property (Registro de Bienes Muebles). This registration annotation means that the bank has a right over the vehicle until the debt is completely liquidated.

In 2026, finishing paying off the loan does not automatically remove that retention. It has to be expressly processed. If you do not do so, the retention remains on the register and can block the sale or transfer of the car when you want to do so.

The process has four steps:

Confirm that no outstanding amount remains (instalment, interest or fee). Request the zero balance certificate and the cancellation letter from the entity. They usually take between 3 and 15 business days to issue them. Present that documentation to the Register of Movable Property so they can cancel the annotation. This can be done directly or through an agency. The cost of the procedure is between 30 and 70 euros in 2026 depending on the province and whether you use an agency. Verify that the cancellation is correctly registered before selling or transferring the car.

If you sell the car without having cancelled the retention of title, the DGT will block the change of ownership until it is resolved. This is a problem that causes delays and can complicate the sale, especially if the buyer needs the car urgently.

Steps to cancel car finance

The complete process, from start to finish:

Step 1: Consult the amortisation schedule. The amortisation schedule is the document that details how much capital remains outstanding, how much interest you have paid and how much you have left to pay. You will receive it with the finance contract. If you do not have it, the entity is obliged to provide it to you when you request it.

You will receive the amortisation schedule with the contract. If you have not signed yet and are comparing options, the article on bank or dealership to finance your car explains what to check before committing.

Step 2: Calculate the real savings. Add the interest you have left to pay according to the schedule plus the cancellation fee. That is the figure you save by cancelling early compared to continuing to pay until the end.

Step 3: Communicate your intention to cancel to the entity. Contact the bank or finance company through the channel you prefer (phone, office, app or email). Communicate that you want to make a total or partial early repayment, indicate the amount and planned date, and ask for confirmation of the exact cost of the fee.

Step 4: Make the payment. The entity will indicate how to transfer the outstanding capital plus the fee. Once the payment is received, the loan is cancelled.

Step 5: Request the zero balance certificate. Request the zero balance certificate and the loan cancellation letter in writing (email or letter). Keep those documents: you will need them to cancel the retention of title.

Step 6: Cancel the retention of title in the Register of Movable Property. With the zero balance certificate, process the registry cancellation in the Register of Movable Property. You can do it directly (by appointment and with the corresponding form) or through an agency. The cost of the procedure ranges between 30 and 70 euros.

Partial cancellation vs total cancellation: differences

Cancellation does not have to be total. You can make partial early repayments, that is, pay an additional amount to the outstanding capital without cancelling the loan completely. This reduces the capital on which future interest is calculated.

When making a partial repayment, you have two options depending on what you agree with the entity: reduce the monthly instalment keeping the same term, or keep the instalment and reduce the number of remaining months. The second option (reducing the term) generates more savings in total interest. The first (reducing the instalment) improves monthly liquidity but the savings are lower.

If you have money available and are hesitant between cancelling or keeping the loan, the article on financing a car or paying in cash helps to calculate which option makes more sense.

Either of the two is better than doing nothing if you have money available that is not generating sufficient return elsewhere.

What happens if you want to sell the car with active finance

If you decide to sell the car before you have finished paying off the finance, you have two main options.

The most common is to cancel the loan with the money from the sale. The buyer pays, you use that money to settle the outstanding balance with the entity and you keep the difference. This is the cleanest process, but it requires good coordination of times.

The alternative is for the buyer to subrogate the finance, that is, to assume the outstanding debt. This is much less common and requires the entity to approve the change of loan holder, which is not always possible or quick.

In any case, the retention of title must be cancelled so that the transfer of the car can be made without blockages. If you have a car with active finance and want to sell it, the article on how to sell a financed car explains the process in detail.

FAQs

Can I cancel my car finance at any time?

Yes. Spanish law recognises your right to make early repayment of the outstanding capital at any time, in full or in part. The entity can charge a fee, but it cannot refuse the cancellation.

How much can the bank charge me for cancelling early?

The maximum legal fee is 1% of the repaid capital if there are more than 12 months left until maturity, and 0.5% if there are 12 months or less left. Many entities apply lower percentages or even zero. Check your contract before cancelling.

What is retention of title and why does it matter when cancelling?

It is a registry annotation that the bank registers in the Register of Movable Property when it finances a car. It prevents selling or transferring the vehicle until it is cancelled. Finishing paying off the loan does not automatically remove it: the registry cancellation must be expressly processed, at a cost of between 30 and 70 euros.

How long does it take for the entity to issue the zero balance certificate?

Between 3 and 15 business days depending on the entity. If you are in a hurry to sell the car, request it with sufficient anticipation.

Is it worth cancelling the finance if I only have a few months left?

If there are less than 6 months left, the interest savings are small and the cancellation fee may not justify it. Do the calculation: add the remaining interest and subtract the cancellation fee. If the result is positive and greater than what that money would generate elsewhere, it is worth cancelling.
