Minimum salary to finance a car in 2026: what banks really ask for

There's no official minimum salary to finance a car. What exists is a 30% rule that lenders apply to calculate how much of a monthly payment you can take on with your salary. We explain how that calculation works, what happens if you earn the SMI (Spain's minimum wage) and how to improve your position if your salary is tight.

Is there an official minimum salary to finance a car?

No. In Spain there is no law or regulation that sets a minimum salary to access vehicle financing. Each entity applies its own risk criteria and studies each application individually.

What does exist is a widely used market reference: the monthly loan payment should not exceed 30% of the applicant's net income. Based on that rule, each entity calculates how much of a payment you can take on and, consequently, what maximum amount it can lend you.

In practice, the minimum income from which most entities favourably study an application is between €1,000 and €1,200 net per month, provided there are no other active debts. Below that figure, financing is not ruled out but conditions become tougher and additional guarantees may be required.

The 30% rule: how banks calculate what you can afford

The logic is simple: the entity calculates 30% of your net monthly income and that is the guiding limit for the payment it considers affordable for your profile. If the payment for the car you want fits within that limit, the operation has a high chance of being approved. If it exceeds it, the probabilities drop significantly.

That 30% does not apply only to the car payment: it is the maximum percentage that the sum of all your monthly debts should represent. If you already have a mortgage, a personal loan or cards with an outstanding balance, that space is reduced proportionally.

Specific examples with the 30% rule:

The right column shows why previous debts are so relevant: a €500 mortgage can completely block access to car financing on salaries below €2,000 net.

To calculate more precisely how much you can finance according to your salary and debt situation, the article on how much you can finance for a car develops this with detailed examples.

Table: what car you can finance according to your salary

This table shows the maximum guiding amount you could finance over 60 months with a 7% APR, without other previous debts, applying the 30% rule:

These amounts are indicative and do not include other debts. If you have active mortgages, loans or cards, the actual amount you will be approved for will be lower.

To see exactly which monthly payment corresponds to each amount and term, consult the car finance payment tables with Spanish market data for 2026.

What happens if you earn the minimum wage (£1,221 gross in 2026)

The minimum wage (SMI) in Spain for 2026 is set at €1,221 gross monthly (in 14 payments), which is equivalent to approximately €950-€1,000 net depending on personal circumstances. Some entities like Autohero explicitly publish that the minimum requirement is to have income above the minimum wage.

With that income, the maximum payment according to the 30% rule is between €285 and €300 monthly. Over 60 months with a 7% APR, that allows financing up to about €14,000-€15,000. If a 20% deposit is provided, you can access vehicles up to €17,500-€18,750: in 2026 there is a reasonable offer of second-hand cars in that range.

To understand how APR affects the real cost of financing according to the amount and the term, the article on what is NIR and APR explains it with concrete examples.

The problem arises when there are other active debts. With the minimum wage and a mortgage or rent to pay, the margin for the car payment is drastically reduced or disappears. In those cases, the options are to provide a larger deposit (to reduce the monthly payment), add a joint applicant, or wait for the financial situation to improve.

A relevant detail: lenders assess net income, not gross. If you earn the minimum wage in 12 payments instead of 14, the monthly net can be different. Always check with the entity what type of proof of income they accept and how they value it.

Other factors that carry as much weight as your salary

Salary is important, but it is not the only criterion. These factors can sway the decision one way or another, regardless of the amount of the payslip:

Job stability. A permanent contract with more than 1-2 years of service in the same company carries positive weight, even if the salary is modest. A temporary contract or less than 6 months at the company creates uncertainty for the lender, even if income is high.

Credit history. If you have paid other loans without issues, that positive history improves your profile. Lenders consult CIRBE and credit reference agencies to verify this.

If you have defaults in credit files, the article on financing a car with ASNEF explains what options exist in that case.

Previous debt levels. The total level of active debts (mortgage, loans, cards) is as relevant as salary. A person earning €2,000 with an €800 mortgage has less margin than someone earning €1,500 with no debts.

Deposit provided. Providing between 20% and 30% of the car's value reduces the capital to be financed and the monthly payment, making the operation fit more easily within the 30% limit.

Assets and savings. Although they do not generate monthly income, having savings or assets (a property, for example) can improve your risk profile with the lender.

How to improve your position if your payslip is tight

If your salary is close to the limit or the payment you need exceeds 30% of your income, there are levers to pull before assuming it is not possible:

Provide a larger deposit. Reducing the financed capital reduces the monthly payment. If you can provide 25-30% of the car's value, the payment drops enough to fit within the permitted margin. Selling your current car before buying the new one is the most direct way to get that deposit without touching your savings.

If you cannot provide a deposit, the article on financing a car with no deposit explains what conditions to expect and how much more it costs compared to financing with an initial contribution.

Extend the term. Going from 48 to 60 or 72 months reduces the monthly payment. It is a solution that works but has a cost: more total interest. Only use it if necessary and do not extend it longer than essential.

Add a joint applicant. If the application is made with two applicants, the lender adds the income of both to calculate the available margin. The joint applicant assumes the same responsibility as the main applicant in case of non-payment.

Look for a more flexible lender. Criteria vary between entities. A rejection at one bank does not mean all entities will reject the operation. Dealerships are usually more flexible than banks with tight profiles, although the financial conditions may be slightly worse.

Cancel minor debts before applying. If you have a credit card with a €3,000 limit that you barely use, cancelling it before applying for car finance can improve your risk profile because it reduces the potential debt that is recorded in the CIRBE.

Self-employed, pensioners and temporary contracts: specific cases

Self-employed. Banks require more documentation: tax return from the last financial year, bank statements from the last 6 months and, in some cases, quarterly VAT declarations. Income stability is the most relevant factor: regular income over the last 2-3 years significantly improves chances.

Pensioners. State pensions are accepted as valid income by most lenders. Non-contributory pensions may not be accepted or may be valued differently depending on the entity.

Temporary contracts. They are not an automatic obstacle, but they reduce the chances of approval. Lenders analyse the duration of the contract and whether there are prospects of renewal or moving to a permanent contract. Some dealerships are more flexible than banks on this point.

Unemployed. Without demonstrable regular income, conventional financing is virtually inaccessible. The options in that case are a joint applicant with income, a guarantor, or waiting to have a stable job situation.

Dealcar: sell your current car to need less financing

If your salary is close to the limit that allows the financing you need, reducing the amount to finance is the most direct lever. Every €1,000 less of financed capital reduces the payment by about €20 monthly over 60 months with a 7% APR. If you have a current car, selling it before buying the next one can be the difference between being approved or not.

FAQs

What is the minimum salary to finance a car in 2026?

There is no official figure. The market reference is between €1,000 and €1,200 net per month for profiles with no other debts. What really determines approval is that the payment does not exceed 30% of net income and that there are no previous debts consuming that margin.

Can I finance a car if I earn the minimum wage?

Yes, if you do not have other debts and the payment for the car you want fits within 30% of your net salary. With the 2026 minimum wage (€1,221 gross, approximately €950-€1,000 net), the margin for the payment is about €285-€300 monthly, which allows financing up to €14,000-€15,000 over 60 months.

Do lenders accept income from self-employed people?

Yes, although they require more documentation: tax return from the last financial year and bank statements from the last 6 months as a minimum. The regularity and stability of income is the most relevant factor for the self-employed.

What happens if I am rejected for finance due to my salary?

You can provide a larger deposit to reduce the payment, add a joint applicant whose income is added to yours, cancel other debts before applying again, or compare with other lenders, as criteria vary. A rejection from one bank does not close all doors.

Does the type of contract affect approval?

Yes. A permanent contract with some length of service favours approval even if the salary is modest. A temporary contract creates more uncertainty for the lender, which will analyse the duration and the prospects of renewal. It is not an automatic rejection, but it reduces the probabilities.
